Imagine you wake up one morning with a terrible headache.
You could take a pain reliever and move on with your day. The headache might even go away for a while.
But what if the headache wasn’t the problem?
What if you were dehydrated? Or needed glasses? Or had an infection? Treating the headache might provide temporary relief, but until you identify the real cause, the symptoms are likely to return. See, business owners do this every day.
They become experts at solving symptoms while the real problem quietly remains.
And it’s one of the biggest reasons businesses stay stuck.
Symptoms Are Loud. Problems Are Hidden.
When something feels off in your business, the symptoms are usually obvious.
- Sales are slowing down.
- You’re working too many hours.
- You’re stressed.
- Cash flow feels tight.
- You’re struggling to find customers.
- Your team isn’t performing the way you’d hoped.
Those things are real.
But they’re usually not the actual problem.
They’re symptoms.
The real problem is often hiding somewhere deeper.
That’s why so many business owners spend months (or even years) working incredibly hard without seeing meaningful progress. They’re solving the wrong problem.
A Few Real-World Examples
“I need more customers.”
Maybe.
But what if your real problem isn’t lead generation?
I’ve seen businesses spend thousands of dollars on advertising only to discover they were converting very few of the leads they already had.
More leads didn’t solve the problem.
A better sales process did.
“I need to lower my prices.”
Sometimes, business owners assume fewer sales mean they’re too expensive.
In reality, they may have failed to communicate their value.
Lowering prices often attracts more price shoppers while reducing profitability.
The real issue wasn’t pricing.
It was positioning and messaging.
“I need to work harder.”
This one breaks my heart because it’s so common.
Many entrepreneurs assume the answer is simply putting in more hours.
But if your processes are inefficient, working longer only multiplies the inefficiency.
The answer isn’t always more effort.
Sometimes it’s a better system.
“Marketing isn’t working.”
Marketing gets blamed for a LOT of problems it didn’t create.
Poor customer experience.
Weak referrals.
Low conversion rates.
Unclear offers.
Lack of follow-up.
Those aren’t marketing problems.
Marketing simply exposes them.
Why This Happens ❓
As business owners, we’re wired to fix things.
When we see a symptom, we naturally jump into action.
We re-design the website.
We hired another employee.
We buy new software.
We start posting more on social media.
Taking action feels productive.
But action without diagnosis can be expensive.
The best business owners aren’t the fastest problem solvers.
They’re the best problem identifiers.
Diagnose Before You Prescribe
Imagine going to a doctor who walked into the exam room and handed you medication before asking a single question.
You’d probably find a different doctor.
Great doctors diagnose before they prescribe.
Business owners should do the same.
Before investing more money…
Before changing your prices…
Before hiring another employee…
Before launching another marketing campaign…
Pause and ask:
How do I know this is actually the problem?
That one question has saved my clients countless hours, dollars, and frustration.
Five Questions to Help You Find the Real Problem
Whenever you feel stuck, ask yourself these questions:
1. Is this a symptom or the root cause?
Don’t stop at the first answer.
Keep asking “Why?” until you can’t go any deeper.
2. What evidence do I have?
Am I making a decision based on data?
Or based on assumptions?
3. What changed?
Problems rarely appear out of nowhere.
What changed in the business before this became an issue?
4. Where is the bottleneck?
Businesses don’t usually have ten major problems.
Most have one or two constraints creating ripple effects everywhere else.
Find those first.
5. What problem am I trying to solve?
This sounds obvious. It isn’t.
Simply writing the problem down often reveals that you’ve been chasing the wrong thing all along.
This Is Why I Built the 6P Business Calibration
One of the biggest challenges in business is that everything is connected.
A problem that appears to be marketing may actually be pricing.
An operations issue might actually be a positioning issue.
A sales problem might actually be a process problem.
That’s why I created the 6P Business Calibration.
Instead of jumping straight to solutions, we step back and evaluate six key areas of the business to identify what’s actually holding growth back.
Because once you identify the real problem, the right solution often becomes surprisingly clear.
One Final Thought 💭
I’ve coached enough business owners to know this:
Most businesses don’t need more tactics.
They need more clarity.
Symptoms demand your attention.
But diagnosis determines your direction.
Before you work harder…
Before you spend more…
Before you chase the next shiny object…
Make sure you’re solving the right problem.
Because the fastest way to waste time in business is to become exceptionally good at fixing something that wasn’t broken in the first place.
Feeling stuck but not sure why?
The 6P Business Calibration is designed to help uncover what’s really holding your business back so you can stop guessing and start growing with confidence.
